10,303,263 businesses and organizations whose EIN appears in a public federal filing or a loaded state registry, plus 28,016,063 state registrations from the Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Texas business registries. Here is what is included and what is not.
Sources searched
Records come from three federal agencies. The updated date is the newest record on file from that source. An organization can appear in more than one.

State registries loaded
These states' own bulk files are searched alongside the federal filings, and their records show the state's status word and the date of the file. Florida publishes every record and the EIN, so its registrations also join the EIN records above; New York publishes active entities only and no EIN.

Organizations by type
Each organization is counted once, under the first type that applies. A charity that also sponsors a retirement plan counts as tax-exempt.
| Business | 7,410,851 |
| Tax-exempt organization | 1,964,958 |
| Employer with a benefit plan | 901,476 |
| SEC filer | 25,978 |

What is not here
The IRS does not publish a directory of businesses, and an EIN is confidential tax information. A private company with no benefit plan, no tax exemption, and no SEC filing has no public record that carries its EIN, so it will not appear here unless a loaded state registry publishes it. Sole proprietors and one-participant retirement plans are left out on purpose, because those records are about a person. When a search finds nothing, the result names the sources that were checked and what to do next.
